Part 4

Two Years Earlier

The Brian Jones

Chapter Thirteen

Leslie sat across from Shane McPhee and waited. She was better at this game than he was, and she wasn’t about to be outsmarted by some dude with a great accent. Why did the man have to be sexy too? It had been a year since her ice water breakup with Mitch, and she hadn’t been on a date since. But this was business, remember that. Just business. She wanted the Uptown Cliffs condo conversion.

Shane, with his thick, unruly mahogany hair with golden highlights, was built like a well-muscled bull. He looked like he could toss her over his shoulder and carry her off to some highland field and ravage her. Damn it if the idea didn’t appeal to her. She hated this kind of complication. Hadn’t the last few years of her life taught her anything? Getting all messed up over some guy could only lead to pain, but it had been a while since she’d felt such instant attraction to anyone. Maybe it was his great, toothy grin. And his voice, she couldn’t ignore it. She was a sucker for accents and the fact he sounded like smooth whiskey sipped by the dram in some quaint little Scottish town warmed her from the inside out. Damn complication. Why did she wonder what kind of lover he would be? Damn it!

“I find you a wee bit over my budget, which isn’t acceptable,” he said, smiling at her as if he were bargaining over something trivial like a felt hat at a street fair in his native Scotland. “I’d have some explaining to do to my partners if I made this deal.”

“Do you want the best realtor, or do you want a bargain agent with sloppy paperwork and no work ethic?” she asked, as she folded her arms and took a stance across from him.

“I want to make some money for myself and my investors. Don’t you think we deserve to break even? With your commission, I’d starve and be living on the streets and my partners would never do business with me again. I wouldn’t even be able to afford a trip back to my homeland to visit me mum and da.”

Maybe she should recommend her ex-fiancé. Maybe Shane and Jack could hang out by a pool together and get whipped by some dominant Barbie women. Shane McPhee was probably into that kind of thing. At least, he looked like he knew how to please a woman, repeatedly.

“Mr. McPhee, you can get quality, you can get it fast, or you can get it cheap. Pick two of the three because with what you’re proposing to pay me, that’s all you’ll get from anyone.”

“You know something, luv, you’re a bit of a hard-nosed businessman wearing a tight skirt.”

That did it for Leslie. She could fantasize all day long, but she didn’t like machismo for the sheer ignorance of it. She stood, adjusted her black suit jacket, and grabbed her briefcase. Too much was too much, and life was too short for this hot Scotsman and his big ego.
